How to make an olive oil hair mask?
You can make your own at home if you want to try an olive oil hair mask. Starting with extra virgin olive oil, before adding other ingredients to your recipe, check how it affects your hair.
Follow these steps to make a hair mask of base olive oil:
1 Olive oil and honey
The soft, sticky ingredient paired with olive oil is a match designed to help in moisture trapping. A honey hair mask, being anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, restores moisture to dry hair and reduces split endings.
Using three spoonfuls of olive oil and one spoonful of honey, and whisk until smooth. If it is still sticky, don’t be afraid to add more olive oil to the mix (option to add a capsule of vitamin E for even greater hair benefits).
Wash your hair with a shampoo and allow it to dry completely before breaking into parts and applying the blend. Cover with a shower cap, plastic wrap, or even those grocery bags that you have been hoarding and leave in for 30 to 90 minutes or so.
Note: If you have dry hair, use this mask twice a week but only once a week if your hair is oily.
2 Olive oil and banana
Bananas can be your snack in the morning, but their rich antioxidants and potassium also prevent hair loss, whereas fatty oils reduce the loss of moisture.
Grab, cut, and chop a ripe banana, then puree it in a blender. Attach a spoonful of olive oil and stir again to achieve a smooth consistency. (You can also add a tablespoon of honey for more moisture.) Wash your hair and apply the mixture to the ends with a heavy emphasis on the damp strands.
Cover with a shower cap, keep it on for 30 minutes, rinse and make your hair good. Using it on dry and damaged hair once a week.
3 Olive oil and avocado
While this mixture would be tempting to eat rather than make a mask, avocados are rich in fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins A, B and E, so share with your hair. Basically, it is the king who makes shinier, smoother, and tangle-free locks. It’s also known as the holy grail for natural hair (thick, coarse, curly, you name it) that needs support locking in moisture and creating curl patterns.
Take a ripe avocado (here’s a go-to hack if you’re not sure), scoop and mash until there are no lumps. Add in two tablespoons of olive oil (adding honey works here as well) and mix until smooth. Wash your hair with shampoo before placing the treatment on damp strands.
Cover and leave for 45 minutes (you can apply heat on low setting for 15 to 20 minutes while wearing the mask for maximum penetration) before rinsing and conditioning your hair like normal. It’s best for dry and damaged hair to do this once a week to once a month, depending on dryness level.
4 Olive oil and egg
The proteins and nutrients present in eggs provide a great boost for healthy hair and add instant shine to brittle, dull strands. The fatty oils of the yolk help fix and nourish dry, weakened strands while the enzymes of the egg whites kill off any oils that surpass them. Like other combinations, every hair style works well with the eggs.
Dry hair should use two yolks of eggs, oily hair should use two whites of eggs and normal / combo hair styles should use an entire egg. Both styles of hair will blend their assigned egg with two spoonfuls of olive oil. To improve hair, add more moisture and/or rising frizz, you can also add Greek yogurt or lemon juice.
Start sectioning off damp hair and applying the treatment throughout (focusing on your hair tips) until you wash with shampoo. A large-tooth comb can assist in spreading the product across your parts. Put on for about 20 minutes.
Rinse the treatment away and let air-dry your hair. Using them once a week.
5 Olive oil and mayonnaise
Mayo isn’t always a favorite fan on sandwiches but in the makeup department it gets the job done. The combination of fats, fatty oils and vitamins helps feed back to life on dry hair. It will keep your hair shinier, smoother and more smooth.
Mix two mayonnaise spoons and a few drops of olive oil. (Add vinegar alternative to remove dandruff, dirt or grime as well.) Wash your hair and let it dry before adding the paste, concentrating on the roots. Leave your hair in for 30 minutes until you wash and clean it.
This hair mask can be used once to twice a week, and should not be used on oily hair.
6 Olive oil and coconut oil
Coconut oil is no stranger to healthy hair, moisturizing skin and improving the immune system. Now, combine that with olive oil and in a mason jar you have magic.
The combination helps to soothe hot, itchy scalps and is a perfect natural antifungal agent for damaged, fine, thin hair. Simply whisk the olive oil and coconut oil together in a bowl (1/2 cup of olive oil and 1 cup of virgin coconut oil) until it is massaged into the hair and scalp.
Prep to disperse, tie your hair and leave for between 30 and 45 minutes (or even overnight). Finally, thoroughly clean your hair with a shampoo and a conditioner. One will use this hair mask at least once a week.
7 Olive oil and baking soda
Baking soda is for many a staple in shampoo substitutions, and a go-to DIY cleaning device, so this combination is a winner. Its anti-fetal and antibacterial properties make exfoliating your scalp and treating any flakes simple.
To form a paste simply add equal parts of olive oil and baking soda together. Massage it about five minutes into your scalp. Replace with shampoo and conditioner, by washing your hair. This combination of hairs can be used bi-weekly or once a month.
Only a few things to keep in mind:
Even though olive oil will work on all types of hair, the amount used may make a big difference. Fine hair should use only a few drops to avoid weighing hair down, and only stay once a week to do a mask. People with thicker hair should start adding more to ensure adequate moisture is absorbed, and seek a twice a week procedure.
It’s also essential to thoroughly wash your hair before and after the procedure. The olive oil hair mask should be more effective on clean hair and the last thing you want when you’re finished is something like salad dressing. Don’t be afraid to wash a few times to ensure it’s removed absolutely.
Treat your hair masks to fun! It’s OK to experiment with the smell by using essential oils or dried herbs (especially with eggs or mayo involved). (A great hack would let dried rosemary or lavender soak in the olive oil for a couple of days to mask the scent.) Tea tree oil and apple cider vinegar are also perfect additions to your masks. Bottom line, the more advantages, the better.
